In which we consider what to give Sly and Doris for Christmas (a non-political, real-time post)

Primo and I are thinking of giving Sly and Doris a framed photo of ourselves for Christmas this year. (In addition to a four-day visit from Primo through Christmas Eve.)

(Primo's Christmas present to me is that I am not going with him to Sly and Doris'.)

(They will hate a photo that has me in it.)

(This is a feature, not a bug.)

What we're not sure of is whether we should also give them a cast-iron cat.

  1. Hmm. Let me give this some thought, and I will come back to you with the answer.

But at a glance, I feel the gift should be something completely confusing. Like... when you stop at one of those tourist shop gas stations in Florida, and see those hanging things made out of macrame and seashells. I mean, what are those things? People obviously buy them, or they wouldn't keep making them...

It should be something big. And cheap. Yard-sale cheap. If you get them something expensive, it will mean you're just frittering away their son's money, you awful, awful woman.

Wait. I just remembered. My mom found a bedpan at her elderly neighbor's yard sale (allegedly unused), bought a bunch of silk flowers, and made a decorative holiday floral arrangement out of it. And shipped it to her best friend as a Christmas joke. He loved it. Apparently it gets displayed every year now for the holidays.

  2. When my husband and I were courting, he went to visit his family for 7 days over Christmas. My Christmas present to him was that I flew out to see him (and meet his parents) on Christmas Day. His birthday present to me a few days later, was that he paid for me to GET THE HELL OUT OF THERE!

  3. A framed photo is perfect. Just perfect.

I'm glad you don't have to go.
