In which I get stressed realizing that the estate taxes are due in two weeks and I wonder why Primo has not even started to organize the paperwork when he has known for a year that this needs to be done
So I do some googling to see what the penalties are for filing and paying late because - I am a rule follower! Taxes have to be filed on time!
And I discover something on the IRS page that you have not a year after the death but only nine months to file and I am starting to hyperventilate and thinking prison and fines and then I slap myself in the face and say, "But wait! The worst that could happen is there is a fine. And the estate would have to pay it."
And I think Primo would agree. He has been a super cranky butt for the past two days. I finally figured out it was because of the taxes, which he does not want to do AND WHO CAN BLAME HIM?
He has been cranky and grouchy and pissed at Sly and Doris for dumping all this crap on him, WHICH THEY DID. They were selfish, thoughtless jerks who went out of their way to make this whole thing painful - disinheriting Primo, but then making him executor and trustee and specifying that he could not be paid.
Every time I get a little annoyed that Primo is not working, I remind myself I would rather have an unemployed Primo and no Sly and Doris than the other way around.

Goldie, thank you for prompting me to do a little research. It's only been three months, but I believe my dad hadn't filed for about 10 years. He was an accountant, believe it or not, before he retired! I'm just going to dump the paperwork on an accountant and throw money at them until it's gone away. I am still waiting for the title to his car, and I'm so sick of dealing with his mess without at least having him around.
ReplyDeletePrimo found the title for his mom and dad's car in a manila envelope on the top closet shelf in the spare room. Have you looked there? (PS He found it after he gave up looking and went to the DMV and paid for a duplicate title.)
DeleteI DID THE SAME THING!! Except I had to send for a duplicate title TWICE, because who knows what happened to the first one, the DMV still gets to keep my money. (I was having them mailed to his place, where they should have been forwarded.) Then I got the second one, and saw there was still a lien on it, even though he paid it off 7 months before he passed away; he just never filed the lien release. So then I had to wait to get a notarized copy of that, so that I could have a clean title, so that I can sell this albatross...er, car.
DeleteNow, as I'm waiting for the final title to arrive in the mail (OF COURSE they don't print it for you, and it takes 2 weeks to print), I find an official copy of the title in the glove box. WHO KEEPS THEIR TITLE IN THEIR CAR?
My dad, that's who, because he was smart, but crazy. I miss him so much.
does your state have an estate or inheritance tax?
ReplyDeleteI don't know. They died in Florida but that's not where we leave. Plus Primo was disinherited so really, it doesn't matter to me. :)
DeleteLet the estate absorb the fine! There is only so much that one mortal can bear!
ReplyDeleteI KNOW!!! I want Primo to quit! Let lawyers deal with it.
DeleteReally, he gets a pass for ever working again because both his awful parents died?
ReplyDeleteOh no no no! What I meant was if I am going to be annoyed about something, Primo being unemployed is WAY better than dealing with Sly and Doris! Having them be not a (major) issue in our lives has made our lives so much better.
