In which Shirley is so, so sad

It's really hard to catch her in the act - the photo below is a rare sighting. We will hear this desolate, muffled yowling in the basement and then the binky will appear someplace random - on top of the stairs, in the kitchen. She holds it in her mouth, carries it, and cries. We have no idea why she does this.

    1. That is her binky! Her rabbit fur binky. It fills her with despair, apparently.

    2. Oh, of course! We call them wubbies...probably started as "lovey" in a baby voice, but now it's been a family neologism for decades, so who knows.

  2. My mom's cat when I was growing up used to carry around socks and cry and cry. He stole them right out of drawers if you weren't looking. The other had a manky piece of old blanket he stole from my mom when she was cutting up rags. Cats are so weird and thrives apparently.

    1. Kittychick, I posted about this on AAM months ago. Our cats are not the only ones who do this! It is some weird cat behavior that we couldn't share until the internet. The main purpose of the internet, of course, besides porn and gambling, is cats. We are a giant cat community.

  3. She may be sick. Have you considered taking her to the vet?

    1. Susan G, I think she's OK. :) She's been doing this for years and it's a common cat thing, we discovered.

  4. My cat used to do this with an old stuffed snowman. She liked to do it in the middle of the night, she would meow and wake us all up. Vet said it was normal.

  5. My kitty does this too! She does it with socks, especially the extra soft & fuzzy kind (chenille I think?) It's very funny, we always say she's singing then go look to see what she dragged out of the bedroom.

She'll also do it with anything that is real fur, be it a cat toy, a vintage stole, or something I had stashed for crafting. The fur she ends up 'cleaning' like it's a kitten, we'll find it covered with wet or dry spitty 'lick marks' X-D

(Like the time she got up onto the top of my crafting shelf and I only found out because there were dried up lick marks all over a fluffy animal tail I'd bought for a project.
The even funnier part is I couldn't figure out how the hell she had gotten (and kept getting) up there until I saw her scale my fabric shelves on the opposite side of the room (which, NBD), tiptoe across the 8 or so feet of curtain rod above our sliding glass door, and make the four foot leap to get where it *was* a Big Deal. Did I mention she is a teeny tiny little thing? That was long jump for her, from a precarious place!

A strategically placed plastic bin put an end to that! And boy was she annoyed when she realized that she couldn't go to the shelf OR turn around on the rod and had to walk along it backwards til she got back to the other side.)

  6. Our young cat will bring us things and meow, too. It took me a few months to figure out that, if I picked the thing up and threw it, she would be delighted to run after it, 'kill' it, and bring it back for me to throw again.

    Our cat figured out fetch.

She'll only play if she initiates it, though. But when she does, it can last half an hour.
